How can we help to save the Earth
Aim: to make students realize that ecological problems concern everybody. Tasks: - to name current environmental problems that our world is facing; - to find out more about ecological organizations and their activities; - to make students survey to learn what regional ecological problems are worried them and what can be done to save the environment. Hypothesis: If we don’t worry about our planet, we won’t survive in future.
It’s a wonderful world we live in
We live on a very beautiful planet – on the Earth. But nowadays people seem to be doing everything to make their home unfit for living. Industrialization has brought us into conflict with the natural environment.
The main environmental problems:
Natural Resource Depletion
Ozone Layer Depletion
Loss of Biodiversity
Public Health Issues
The results of peoples influence on the environment
Pollution is one of the most burning problems of nowadays. Now millions of chimneys, cars, buses, trucks all over the world exhaust fumes and harmful substances into the atmosphere. These poisoned substances pollute everything: air, land, water, birds, animals and people. So, it is usually hard to breathe in the large cities where there are lots plants. Everything there is covered with soot and dirt. It affects harmfully on people’s health.
Water pollution is very serious, too. Ugly rivers of dirty water are polluted with factory waste, poisoned fish are all-round us. And polluted air and poisoned water lead to the end of the civilization. So, nowadays a lot of dead lands and lifeless areas have appeared. Our actions and dealings can turn the land to a desert.
Our forests are natural sinks of carbon dioxide and produce fresh oxygen as well as helps in regulating temperature and rainfall. All over the world the forests are disappering. People cut the trees down because they need wood and paper or new places for farms and houses.
The over consumption of resources and creation of plastics are creating a global crisis of waste disposal. Plastic, fast food, packaging and cheap electronic wastes threaten the well being of humans.
Global Warming and Climate change
Climate changes like global warming is the results of human practices like emission of Greenhouse gases. Global warming leads to rising temperatures of the oceans and the earth’ surface causing melting of polar ice caps, rise in sea levels and also unnatural patterns of precipitation such as flash floods, excessive snow of desertification.
The population of the planet is reaching unsustainable levels as it faces shortage of resources like water, fuel and food.
Acid rain occurs due to the presence of certain pollutants in the atmosphere. Acid rain is a known environmental problem that can have serious effect of human health, wildlife and aquatic species.
Genetic modification of food results in increased toxins and diseases as genes from an allergic plant can transfer to target plant. Genetically modified crops can cause serious environmental problems as an engineered gene may prove toxic to wildlife.
So, there is no escape from the ecological crisis without organizing a body dealing with the environmental problems, developing and carrying out a nationwide program of environmental protection and co-operating with international schemes.
Nowadays there are many different pressure and interests groups in the world, which try to find solutions to the problems of pollution at the national and international level. So they are groups of people with a common interest in trying to draw the public attention to environment problems, to influence the government decisions.
The main mission of Kids for a clean environment (“ Kids F.A.C.E”) is to provide information, to encourage and facilitate youth’s involvement with effective environmental actions. Membership of organization is free for all “Kids F.A.C.E” started in 1989.
Greenpeace is an organization whose members work actively to protect the environment from damage, caused by industrial processes or military activities. Greenpeace has been campaigning against environmental degradation since 1971.
PeTA (people for the ethical treatment of animals) is one of the largest animal right organization in the world. PETA is dedicated to establish and protect the rights of all animals. This organization focuses their attention on the areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer more intensely for the longest periods of time. It was founded in 1980.
ISSG (invasive species specialist group) aims to reduce threats to natural ecosystems and the natural species. They contain by increasing awareness of invasive alien species. ISSG is a global group of scientific and policy experts on invasive species from 41 countries.
RSPCA (the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has been working since 1824,promoting kindness to animals, trying to prevent cruelty to them. This organization called the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals because Queen Victoria gave her permission for the RSPCA to be called that.
WWF (the World Wide Fund for nature) is one of the world’s most experienced, independent conservation organizations with a global network active in more than 100 countries. WWF ’s mission is to stop degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature.
“Friends of the Earth” (FoE) is one of the British pressure groups with an international reputation. Its general aim is to conserve the planet’s resources and reduce pollution. FoE was established in 1971 and now it operated in 44 countries worldwide. It campaigns among other things, for recycling and renewable energy, and the destruction of wildlife and habitat.
Regional environmental problems
According to O.Korolev much has been done to reduce deletarious effect upon the environment in Lipetsk Region.
It’s a result of dynamic development of economy, occurence of scientific and technical achievements, the occurred changes in the ecological policy and legislation
Nature – conservative regulations
Novolipetsk Corporation is one of the first steel-making companies that was granted the certificate of Environment Management compliance with the Requirements to International Standart.
Administration of the Lipetsk Region initiates the international ecological forum “Formation of system of ecological safety of regions in the conditions of dynamic development of economy”.
The initial steps
1) Try not to waste energy
2) Never drop litter
3) Use litter bins
4) Clean up local beaches
5) Organize a clean-up-day
6) Take rubbish to local recycling centers
7) Don’t waste paper
8) Walk or cycle whenever possible
9) Try to reduce noise pollution
10) Take care of nature
The Earth is our home and it depends on us what it will be like. We should take care of the environment for ourselves and for the next generations
Only when all the rivers have run dry And all the fish in the sea have died Only when all the rainforests have been burnt down And there is no food for animals Only when all the blue skies have been filled with smoke And the cities of the world have choked Will the white man understand that It’s too late to save the earth.
