Easter

Easter.
Easter is a Christian holy day in March or April when Christians remember the death of Christ and his return to life. At Easter people usually exchange dyed eggs. The date of Easter is always celebrated on a Sunday between 22 March and 25 April according to the Gregorian calendar.

Easter symbols.
.The symbols of this holiday are: dyed eggs, little chicks, little rabbits, pussy-willows, palms and hot cross buns.

On Good Friday bakers sell hot cross buns .
Hot Cross Buns. Hot cross buns, Hot cross buns, One a penny, Two a penny, Hot cross buns. If you have no daughters Give them to your sons. One a penny, Two a penny, Hot cross buns.
Hot Cross Buns with their combination of spicy, sweet and fruity flavours is an Easter tradition. The pastry cross on top of the buns symbolises and reminds Christians of the cross that Jesus was killed on. A Hot Cross Bun Ceremony takes place each Good Friday.

When Easter comes…

The Crucifixion- the death of Christ on the cross. Ash- the soft grey powder. Lent- a period of fasting. Equinox- 1 of 2 times in a year when night and day are of equal length. Confession- when you tell a priest or God about the bad things you have done. Palms- large pointed leaves of a tropical tree which grows near beaches.

Easter eggs.
Originally Easter eggs were painted with bright colours to represent spring. In England on Easter morning children search the eggs that Easter Bunny had hidden while they were asleep. Ukrainians decorate eggs called «pysanki». The Armenians decorate eggs with pictures of Christ and the Virgin Mary. In parts of Germany and Austria green eggs are used on Holy Thursday. The Romans celebrated the Easter season by running races on oval track and giving eggs as prizes.

Easter flowers.
Lots of Flowers are associated with spring and Easter festivals. Easter Lilies are often white and represent a sign of Purity and Goodness. These help Christians to remember that Jesus was pure and perfect when he died on the Cross.

Butterfly – the symbol of of Easter.
The Butterfly is one of the significant symbols of Easter. Its whole life cycle is meant to symbolize the life of Jesus Christ. The first stage is the caterpillar, which stands for His life on Earth. Second phase begins from the cocoon stage, portraying the crucifixion and burial of Jesus. The third and final stage is the butterfly, representing His raising from the dead in a glorified body and peace.

Maundy Thursday Ceremony.
In England today, the Queen follows a very traditional role of giving Maundy Money to a group of pensioners. The tradition of the Sovereign giving money to the poor dates from the 13th century.

Easter Parade.
Each year the capital city of Britain greets spring with a spectacular Easter Parade in Battersea Park. The great procession, or parade, begins at 3 p.m. The parade consists of many decorated floats. At the rear of the parade is usually the very beautiful float richly decorated with flowers.

Shrove Tuesday.
The Olney pancake race is now run from the Market Place to Church. when the large bronze 'Pancake Bell' is rung from the Church at 11.55 am. Competitors must wear a traditional housewife's costume (a skirt, an apron, head covering – scarf) and carry a frying pan containing a pancake. They race a distance of 415 yards (375-metres)

Egg rolling.
"Egg rolling" is an old Easter game, traditionally played on Easter Monday. Children roll eggs down a grassy slope and the first egg to reach the bottom without breaking is the winner. If the eggs reach the bottom without breaking it is said to bring good luck.
