1.The reason for the start of the war
Reasons for the start of the war. The southern United States was completely dominated by slavery before the Civil War. Moreover, the attitude towards the slaves, and the conditions of their life and work were unbearable.

Planters lived in the South, wealthy descendants of the European aristocracy. They owned vast agricultural lands, for the cultivation of which they used slaves. Southerners led a measured life away from big cities and adhered to conservative views. Politics in the South was built on the principle of "do what you want, but do not interfere with others" - each state, in fact, was an independent state.

The first stage of the war 01
On April 12, 1862, in Georgia, a group of Northern saboteurs stole a steam locomotive from the Confederates and set off for Tennessee, setting fire to bridges behind them, damaging the rails and cutting telegraph wires. Opponents tried to catch up with them on another locomotive. This episode entered the history of the American Civil War as the "Great Engine Race".

The Battle of Antietam became the bloodiest day in all the years of the American Civil War - about 3.6 thousand people died on both sides of the front in one day. The battle ended in a virtual draw, but the Southerners retreated.
The authority of Lincoln, who still hoped to solve the problem without unnecessary bloodshed, began to decline - he was condemned for indecision and weakness of character. The defeats of 1861-1862 forced Washington to move to tougher measures.

Second stage of the war 1863-1865
In early 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared all slaves in the Southern states free. Negroes were able to fight for their independence in the ranks of the Federation army. This decision completely changed the nature of the war - now it was fought not only for the preservation of the unity of the United States, but also for the abolition of slavery. Great Britain and France, former trading partners of the Southern states, now looked favorably on Lincoln's actions, and Russia even sent a naval squadron to support the president (however, the Russians did not take part in this war).

In 1864, the commander-in-chief of the US Army, Ulysses Grant, developed a plan for the final defeat of the Confederacy. The first blow was to be delivered by General William Sherman: he entered Georgia, and regardless of the losses, destroying everything in his path, he moved to the Atlantic Ocean.

Second stage of the war 1863-1865 02
On May 10, with the arrest of Jefferson Davis and other members of the government, the Confederate States of America ceased to exist. Separate units of the CSA still continued to resist, but by August 1865 the war was over.
