US territory was inhabited by the Indians from ancient times. The ancestors of the Indians migrated to America from North-East Asia. The term "red", common as a symbol of Indian popular culture has nothing to do with natural skin color Indians (from white to dark). It comes from the custom of the Red Indians tribe who painted their faces and clothes.

All the Indians have common features that bring them with a population of Asia. They have yellowish or reddish brown skin tone, hard straight hair, broad face and prominent cheekbones.

In the North America there were about 400 of Indian tribes. They all spoke different languages and had no written language. However, in 1826, the leader of the tribe Cherokee - Sequoia created syllabic alphabet and in 1828 he began to issue the newspaper "Cherokee Phoenix" on the Cherokee language.

All clothes of men and women were made of dressed bison skins. Men and women were decorated with porcupine needles. Combat shirts, decorated with scalps, wore only the leaders and the most famous warriors of the tribe. In this solemn attire included cloak, which was often portrayed exploits its owner.

But the most magnificent decoration of the Indians was the head bandage with eagle feathers. Every bird's feather in the dressing meant some courageous act of the person who wore this jewelry. Main hunting and weapons Indian Prairie remained onions, which they preferred much more than even the gun.

The Indians were engaged in hunting, gathering, agriculture. Northern Indians hunted sea mammals. After Europeans came to the continent the Indians began to keep horses and with guns made hunting for bison easier and faster. Indians grew crops and raised animals such as Turkey and Guinea pig.

The Indians made ceramics: vessels, statuettes and masks and ritual objects.

As of the beginning of the XXI century their total number exceeds 60 million people.
