Geographical location of the USA
The USA occupies the middle part of the North American continent, stretching from ocean to ocean. The United States borders Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The state also includes the islands of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean and the state of Alaska on the peninsula of the same name in northwestern North America, across the Bering Strait from the Russian Far East.
The United States is a federal republic governed by a strong central government with relative independence of the subjects of the federation.
The highest federal legislative body of the United States is the Congress, consisting of two chambers — the lower, called the House of Representatives, and the upper— the Senate. Both chambers are formed on an elective basis.
In the upper house of Congress, each state is represented by two senators. The House of Representatives consists of 435 deputies (this figure was established in 1910). Each state must be represented in it by at least one person.
The head of state in the United States — the president — is also the head of the executive branch. The President has very great powers. He issues government decrees that have the force of law, submits bills to Congress for discussion, and then approves laws passed by congressmen. The President is the Supreme Commander—in-chief of all branches of the armed forces. He conducts the foreign policy course of the state, determines the content of the state budget.
The American president is elected for four years on the basis of a nationwide secret ballot of adult citizens of the United States.
The president can only hold office for two terms, even if he is very popular in the country. Any citizen over the age of 35 who is a native of the United States and has lived in the country for at least 14 years can become President of the United States.
The supreme judicial authority is the Supreme Court of the United States, consisting of nine people — the Chief Justice and eight associate members appointed by the President and confirmed by senators.
