Hospitality
comes from the Latin hospis
(убежище, кров).
It means
“to provide care / shelter for travelers”.
The Latin word used for guests is hospites.
Hospis is the root for the English word host
where the p was dropped for convenience of pronunciation

Ancient Times
The Sumerians (who lived in what is now Iraq)
were the first to record elements of hospitality in
about 4,500 years Before the Common Era.
They often moved and were able to trade.

camping skills or a local’s kindness.

The ancient Greek concept
of hospitality
was the generosity and courtesy
shown to those who were far from home.
The rituals of hospitality expressed a reciprocal relationship between guest and host .
The rules were known as Xenia [ ξενία ] «ксенос»-гость, чужеземец

Xenia
consisted of two basic rules:
1) The respect from host to guest.
The host must be hospitable to the guest and
provide him/her with food and drink and a bath. It is not polite to ask questions until the guest has stated his needs.
2) The respect from guest to host.
The guest must be courteous and polite
to the host.

Important guests in Russia are welcomed with a traditional karavaj (‘a loaf of black bread’)
and salt.

Traditionally, dear guests were greeted on the doorstep with bread and salt. Bread and salt have long been considered symbols of abundance and prosperity, and salt acted as an amulet. To meet travelers with bread and salt meant to give them your wishes for peace and good. Guests, in turn, could also come with similar gifts to express their respect and wishing prosperity to the owner.

St Benedict established the rule of monastic life that was later to be adopted by most Western monasteries.

It was founded in the 9th century as a religious order-
